“You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” But magicians should also think about the last impression that they make.
Ensuring that you end your 'magic set' with a strong and memorable magic trick is essential, but you also need to check that your body language, and the words you say are just as positive as that last magic trick you performed.
Give feedback.
It's easy to forget the spectators around you, right at the moment that you say goodbye. At the moment you end your last magic trick, you may be thinking about leaving, and planning your transition to the next group. Don't just focus on that feedback. Give your own 'thank you' in return. That may be a simple smile with your eyes or even a few words. It's important that you interact with them at that moment. Express how much you enjoyed their company too. It may only be a subtle gesture, but you should communicate something positive about the interaction before you leave them.
Say Goodbye.
David Blaine might like to perform a magic trick to a stranger on the street, then mysteriously walk away. However, for magicians performing in real life, that's a very bad way to make an exit. Remember to take a moment to say goodbye. A simple, polite and honest farewell goes a long way. Saying something like:
"You guys were great fun."
"It was wonderful meeting you."
Make sure you smile, and make eye contact. The key is to take a moment to let the group know that you are not just going through the motions. You enjoyed their company just as much as they liked yours.
Remember to say good-bye as graciously and kindly as you can. It costs you nothing to do so and will pay you back far more than you could ever imagine.
Sage advice. Always leave them feeling warm and wanting to see you again.
