How to Make Magic Tricks Connect People Together.

by Merchant of Magic 22 Comments

Magicians Connectng PeopleDo your magic tricks create anything more than entertainment and amazement for the people that watch them? Could they lead to more intimate connections between the people that watch them?

Last night I was at the Double Tree Hilton in Tower Hill doing walk-around magic for Kraft Foods, and I was running through my favorite coin routine, when something dawned on me. The coin trick has a ‘hook’ in its presentation that can be applied to so many other close up magic tricks to increase their impact of spectators. It’s a very small extra step that I have added which is probably overlooked by most of the spectators. However, for just a few, every now and then, it can make their whole evening and possibly change their lives. How many other little additions to a trick can do that?

Want to know what it was? I grabbed my iPhone and talked about it in this short video:

Video podcasting does not come naturally to me. Which is strange as I’m very used to performing magic in front of people. Perhaps that’s why I very rarely appear in any of the magic DVD’s that The Merchant of Magic have produced in the past. Please excuse the sound quality, It was filmed moments before I had to start performing, so please take it as you find it.

If it’s well received, maybe I will post up a few more videos as well as written posts to the blog.
Best wishes

Dominic Reyes

Wonderful piece of advice Dominic !

One more step to the hands-on approach. Not only does the magic happen in the spectator’s hand, but it happens in the hand of those who hold another hand.

Great way to connect people !

Great thinking Dominic thanks for sharing when thought about all the good tricks involve this element of having more than 1 person sharing the magic ;)) I like it a lot thanks again

That was very good advice. I like adding the additional spectator also because spectators believe in stooges. This disproves having that secret partner ( for the people who believe in that) while introducing that intimacy. I can not wait to see how many chances I have to do what you have taught.

Having spectators make a physical connection, whether holding hands, puting a hand on the other's shoulder, etc is something I've included in my performances for many years and learned from a fantastic entertainer, Barryn Stroh,in the early 80's.  Very powerful and adds to the fun of the routines.

It’s surprising the reaction that a small detail like this can cause. It’s pretty easy to look thorugh your working set and notice points in many of the routines when you can bring people together. Thanks for posting!

I have been doing this for years in my own close up table hopping. But if you are not familiar with this ‘trick’ be sure to add it. It adds another dimension. Good advice.

Good idea I hadn’t thought of using it in magic; I used to get all the people involved in my hypnotic act to hold hands for a few moments and then close their eyes; before being seated to be hypnotised. It created a great atmosphere for what followed.
Mentalists could also use it to build up the psychic energy before their miracles. Thank you for sharing.

Yeah! Creating a Dominic Reyes moment…
I’ll be doing a lot of re-thinking with this as a general principle.
