Seeing so many old effects from when I was young – particularly with cards – being sold as new, and even laid claim to by some as original, makes me wonder if I should manufacture a few of my own. Although magic has always been secondary to my brand of entertainment, it is through popular demand, taking a more central role. In the early days my ‘magic’ was almost exclusively card related and it was at such a time gaff and gimmick cards weren’t readily available.
All I had in my arsenal were a Svengali deck and a marked deck. Crimping and palming were the most commonly used techniques. I wouldn’t have considered myself a magician but my knowledge of card tricks was second to none and it all came from old books. There was even mentalism but I didn’t really consider it as such, merely audience-management, yet recent forays into mentalism show these age old techniques are still very much in practise.
I am publishing a book in March which delves into all this, and it will indeed be a new book on old magic.
A big thank you for the excellent all round service from the guys at MoM as I adapt to a slight deviation in my overall presentations.
