Magic Tricks For A Wedding Speech – Recommended

by Dominic Reyes 1 Comment

magic tricks for a wedding speechJohn has been asked to perform some magic tricks for a wedding speech. He’s not sure what to do..

Hi Guys, I perform close up fairly often at weddings, but recently I have been asked to perform magic tricks for a wedding speech at my Granddaughter wedding. It will be performed at the Reception directly after the speeches, therefore at the top table, but for ALL the wedding guests. Obviously I want this to go well for both my Granddaughter and her Husband. I would really appreciate any advice you could give me regarding suitable effects, and presentation under this situation. Thanking you in advance, John.

Hi John,

We spoke on the phone earlier, I would be more than happy to help out with some sort of ideas for a presentation. Choosing the right magic tricks for a wedding speech depends on several factors:

How long are you performing for?

Do you perform magic, mentalism a mix of both?

Are you comedic or serious?

What are the guests going to be like? Do your families have riotous senses of humor or are would you definitely be airing on the side of caution?

I saw this presentation from another pro magician at a wedding where he was performing, he was best man at the wedding and this was his 8 minute set:

Nick Crown Magician

Obviously this cost a little bit of money and it doesn’t have to be that expensive a routine but it is worth looking at the structure of the routine, the pacing etc.

Here are some products I would suggest you check out, you could easily build a 5 – 8 minute set with these.

Too Hot To Handle (Drink Prediction) Then you could switch the can at the end of the effect (on the offbeat) and perform Healed and Sealed 2.0.

Ring Leader Ring of String Routine and finish with Ring Flight

Invisible Deck sent to the bride and groom in a sealed envelope, you then have the bride decide the suit and the groom the card value and you have a very strong, easy to do prediction

You could perform a Bank Night Routine with (Like Blank Night by John Archer) but instead of money you could say inside one envelope is a photo of them together. Each envelope they choose you cut/rip up or burn until there is one left, this of course is the only one with the photo in it. You can then perform Torn 2 Pieces by Shawn Farquhar with the photo leaving them with an impossible souvenir.

The Best Wedding Fayres for Magicians

by Dominic Reyes 1 Comment

Best wedding fayres for magicians

By Dominic Reyes

Mark writes: 'I plan to advertise my magic using wedding fayres. Can you give me some tips about choosing the right type of fayre?'

There have been a few email this week from magicians wanting advice about hinding the best wedding fayres to attend. So, I recorded this short video answeringsome questionsabout picking the best wedding fayres for magicians:

How many wedding fayres should a magician do?

It really depends on your diary and how much you want to work. Personally I attend around 6-8 wedding fayres over the course of a year. That will usually fill up my dairy for the following year. I don't want to only do weddings, as a great deal of my work comes from corporate entertainment, so that amount of wedding fayres works perfectly for me. I may only get 3 or 4 bookings from each wedding fayre, but each of those gigs will generate more work from referalls. The end result is usually 1 or 2 weddings each week thoughout the year. That consistant work pays my bills and puts bread on the table. The rest of the years diary can be filled with parties and higher paying corporate work.

How much work do you need for the lifestyle you want? How busy you are happy to be often depends on how much you charge, just as much as the quantity of magic gigs you take on. Check out this post about how much to charge and the amount of gigs you need to make a living performing magic.

The Location

There are large hotel wedding fayres and small independed hotels putting on their own shows. Big isn't always better. It's more important to know the expected footfall at the fayre, and the demographic of the visitors.

Large country houses near wealthy areas are a great bet if you charge a larger fee for your magic. Equally, if you are targeting a lower income audience, you may want to attend less prestigious venues. Who are the clients that most often book you? Where would THEY most probably visit to look for suppliers within their budget?

Advertising the Wedding Fayre

It's worth talking to other suppliers that attend the wedding fayre that you are considering. Ask them about footfall, and about how the show is promoted. The organisers can also tell you if the show will be advertised on the local radio and in local papers leading up to the day. Go for wedding fayres that invest in good advertising as that directly correlates to footfall on the day.

Get a copy of the wedding fayre mailing list

Many organisers will have a sign-up mailing list for brides to opt into when they enter the event. Good wedding fayres will allow suppliers to get a copy of this list, and it's worth it's weight in gold. If you can get a copy of the list, make sure you use it to send out a follow up email about your services and an invitation to find out more.

No Reaction To Magicians at Wedding Fayres

by Dominic Reyes 1 Comment

Wedding Fayres No Reaction

By Dominic Reyes

Magicians at wedding fayres shouldn't prejudge reactions.

'Hi Dominic,

Many thanks for getting back so quick, and your agent has sent across the details.

Both very impressed yesterday, especially my fiancée who's a bit of a sceptic, so it would be fantastic if we could book you!'

I attended a wedding fayre yesterday. As with all the wedding fayres I do, I try to perform a magic trick to as many people as possible. I view it as a 'numbers game'. The more prospective clients I can show my magic to, the more potential bookings I could get. I always go about it in the same way:

I stand in front of my small table and stop everyone that walks past to show them a quick trick. I can usually tell within a few moments if there is interest beyond them simply being polite. It can feel like a bad sign and that your performance is not going to lead anywhere when the groom stops and the bride walks on by and starts looking at another stand. However, that's not always a signal that you won't be getting a booking from that couple.

A couple approached me and I stopped them to show them a trick. The bride walked on and started browsing through wedding dresses at the stand next to me. I didn't let that stop me though, as the groom seemed eager to see the magic.

Halfway through the card trick the bride returned and watched the finish with a bored expression, she seemed to be more interested in everything else in the room. It felt as though she was quietly waiting for her partner to finish up and join her on the bridal gown stand.

The couple didn't really react to the trick and politely took one of my business cards and moved on. I went straight on to the next couple that were passing and thought no more about it.

This morning I recieved an email from my agent to tell me that the couple had booked me. That really, really surprised me.

Don't prejudge reactions at wedding fayres

It's so easy to assume that a spectator isn't enjoying your performance at a wedding fayre if you judge it only by the way they react to your magic. That's not always the best way to gage how well you are doing.

There are a million and one things on a couple's minds at a wedding fayre. They are working through a checklist of things that are need for their day and there are other things to be arranged and researched.

The couple may not have even considered using a magician as part of their entertainment. People make their minds up very quickly if magic is something they would like at their party. Once that decision has been made, they instantly turn their minds to the price and when magic would fit into the timing of the day. That's a lot of things to think about which can get in the way of a good reaction.

It would have been very easy for me to have decided that this couple were not going to book me, and end the trick earlyand not hand out a business card or take their details. Luckily, I carried it through to the end and gave them a business card.

Do This:

Forget about prejudging. At a wedding exhibition make sure that you show EVERYONE a trick if you can. Even if they don't seem to be reacting as you want them to. You don't know them, or the pressures they are facing on the day. A lack of reaction could simply be caused by them thinking through the options.

Perform your best to everyone. You simply never know if they will book you.
