Best Valentines Day Magic TricksSo, it is this time of year again… Love is in the air!!

Valentine’s Day is a very special day for many couples. If you perform magic for a couple on Valentine’s Day it can be a real treat to do something amazing that relates to it.

The more you can tailor your magic to your surroundings, the more meaning it has. As a result, the reactions and emotions your magic evokes can dramatically increase.

Here are some suggestions of the most relevant magic tricks you can do for a couple.

Magic to perform for couples

Anniversary Waltz – This is a classic magic trick that is perfect for any situation where you find yourself performing for a couple.  To different SIGNED selections end up being fused together into one playing card for a souvenir that will frame the moment forever.

OCL – Ben Williams – Any magic trick where you link something to something else is ideal for couples. Ben Williams has devised the worlds first and ONLY linking playing card trick where the linked rings can be examined! Two card rings are torn from a single playing card; each playing card ring is signed by the couple. These card rings are then rubbed together and impossibly link! These linked playing card rings can then be examined and if you like kept as a souvenir by the couple!

Linking Hearts – Paul Romhany – This is the classic linking rings routine made perfect for Valentine’s Day. Instead of linking circular metal rings, you magically link and unlink heart shaped rings, this gives you ample amount of room to create a perfect patter line for your couple. The unique design of the heart shaped rings has allowed for a whole range of new visual links and unlinks.

Twilight Angels – Paul Harris – Twilight Angels has been a staple magic trick we have always suggested when anyone wants a great effect to perform for a couple. One of the angels on the back design of a SIGNED playing card is moved in the most magical way. It is then revealed sitting next to the other angel on the opposite side of the card!

That’s Amore – Nathan Kranzo – INSTANT DOWNLOAD – A collection of 19 great magic tricks specially devised for couples. Great names like Nathan Kranzo, Reed McClintock, Gregory Wilson and Luke Dancy have all contributed to this amazing PDF. This is an Instant Download PDF so you can be learning these secrets in just a few minutes!

Souvenir Linking Loverbands – Every once in a while a magic trick comes along that is devised to be performed for a couple. Souvenir Linking Loverbands is one of those magic tricks. It is a simple premise; you show two rubber bands that are shaped like hearts, and then you link them together forever! This is another perfect magic trick that leaves the couple with a souvenir that frames the moment of magic forever.

Want to impress that special someone?

Maybe you’re not looking for a magic trick to show a couple; instead you may want to create a moment for someone special in your life.

There are lots of great ways to use magic to create a lasting moment between you and another person, magic tricks can really help establish a connection between you and someone else. In order to help out anyone looking for some magic like this, we have devised a list to suit this situation.

Psypher – Robert Smith – To read another person’s mind is one sure fire way of creating a moment between two people. Psypher is one of the best devises on the market for mind reading, reliable to use it allows you to  concentrate fully on your performance; which is exactly what you would want to do if you were looking to establish a connection between you and someone else.

Into the Abyss – Oz Pearlman – This is a collection of 3 extremely strong presentations for mind reading. Oz describes how to perform these mind reading miracles so you can really get the most from performing them. This is a great set of routines to practice your cold reading, in fact, Oz teaches you some basics to get you started.

Slide – By Titanas and De’Mon – Slide is a super easy torn and restored signed card trick. What makes it perfect for that someone special is that you sign half of the card and the spectator signs the other half. The card is torn in half; they can clearly see your signed half and their signed half; you touch them together for a moment and they stick! However they are off centre, then, slowly and magically the piece slides into perfect alignment, you then hand the signed card back for inspection. Slide lends itself perfectly to patter about attraction and ‘perfect fits’.

Firestarters – Jay Sankey – This is a DVD specifically filmed to teach great ways to use your magic to help begin that connection with someone. Jam packed full of visual routines that all have that special creative thinking Sankey applies to all of his magic. This DVD is perfect for anyone looking for someone special.

Napkin rose – Michael Mode – To create a moment for someone; sometimes it is best to create something! Napkin Rose by Michael Mode is one of the best little giveaways you can create for someone special. You take a simple napkin from anywhere, and with a minute or two you have folded it into a beautiful rose!

Folding Money Fooling – Robert Neale – If you liked the idea of creating something special for your someone special then why not look into this. Not exactly magic but very touching, Folding Money Fooling is a collection of great origami you can do with banknotes. Taking something ordinary like a banknote and then to folding it into something amazing sometimes can be just as powerful as a magic trick. Imagine how that someone special would react if you turned a banknote into a butterfly that actually had wings that fluttered!

So these are some of our suggestions as to what magic tricks you can use to frame the moment for your spectators (or indeed that someone special) on Valentine’s Day. As mentioned previously, to make your magic topical can really help increase the emotions and reactions from your magic. Use this opportunity to go out and give your someone a memory that will last for a lifetime!

How Magicians Get Tips – A Letter to the Magic Shop

by Merchant of Magic Leave a Comment

Glen-Neckles-Professional-MagicianWe got a letter today from one of the magicians who receives our coaching and advice. Glen has been a regular customer at the Merchant of Magic for quite a while and even came and helped out in the bricks and mortar shop to gain experience last Christmas. But Glen had a problem. He was asked to work at a venue which requires it’s performers to work for tips. That’s very rare in the UK, and Glen being a typical English gentleman, he found it very difficult to find a way to approach this. He wanted to know how magicians get tips in in the UK.

He sent the Merchant of Magic team this letter:

A big Thank you to all the guys at The Merchant of Magic.

As a working magician it is very refreshing to be able to receive expert advice about products and handling from people who really understand the profession.

I have certainly benefited from their real world advice.

One such incident occurred a few months ago, when Ben Williams recommended a brilliant card trick called Up the Ante. I used the card trick to great effect while working as guest magician at The Illusions Bar in Bristol. The guys in the bar generally work for tips, something I have always felt uncomfortable about. However, I was able to use the routine to invite those who enjoyed my act to engage in a game  of chance. Believe me the audience were more than happy to show their appreciation after witnessing this amazing piece of magic.

Up the Ante one of those gambling card tricks that unfolds from a deck that has been genuinely shuffled by the spectator, with each phase becoming more and more impossible. It really is a fantastic routine, that enabled me to overcome my reluctance to accept tips and more importantly gave my audience an amazing closing effect.

Thanks again guys. Keep up the good work

Derren Brown – Revealing the Secrets of Derren Brown

by Merchant of Magic 4 Comments

Derren-Brown-mind-readerDerren Brown presents his mind reading skills much the same way that historical entertainers demonstrated psychic and paranormal abilities. However, he often states to the audience that the secrets to his powers are, in fact, a combination of magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship. The revelation of a method hides the true secret and heightens the interest of the spectators.

A refreshing presentation of traditional mentalism.

Derren Brown often gives the audience a false explanation for his tricks, whilst delighting in debunking the psychics and mediums, who claim their powers are real.

In doing this, he often provides an equally fictional revelation of the magic secret. By claiming, he is using skills to predict and control a spectators mind with suggestion and manipulation of their free will. He often attributes his powers to reading physical and psychological indicators. One of the most popular methods he reveals is the use of body language to predict what an audience member is thinking.

Mentalists often argue that much of that IS possible. We wouldn’t argue with that at all, but the interesting point for us, is not his actual methods, but rather his use of a revelation of the secret to cover the true method.

How can that be applied to your magic?

When you perform your magic, what explanation do you currently give?

  • You have magical powers.
  • Your props have magical powers.
  • The spectator has magical powers.
  • You are using trickery.

The source of your power’ that you choose to build into a tricks presentation will greatly change the way your spectators view and interact with you. It will also either increase or decrease the strength of the magic trick you are presenting.

If you are inspired by the approach Derren Brown takes, experiment with the source of your magic. You can turn a stale trick, that you don’t seem to get great reactions from, into one of your strongest routines.

You can’t have your cake and eat it

A word of warning: You need to be consistent in the source of your magic At least within each act you construct. If you attribute your skills to sleight of hand, then claim magical powers for the next trick, it just won’t wash with your audience. Equally, presenting yourself or an object as magical, as you demonstrate sleight of hand techniques won’t be very effective either.
