7 Magicians Hooks That Make People Pay Attention to Your Magic Tricks

by Merchant of Magic Leave a Comment

A magicians hook is a technique that magicians can use to make people interested in their magic tricks. It’s a dramatic technique most often used in good writing and advertising  You may have an amazing magic trick to show your audience, but unless you capture their attention quickly, you may not be getting the best reactions to your magic. Let’s look at 7 hooks that professional magicians use to make spectators pay attention to their magic:

1. Begin your magic tricks with a simile or a metaphor.
Your mind is like an open book. These coins are like people.

2. Ask a question.
Do you know what real magic looks like?

3. Give a definition.
Magic is….  A magician is….

4. State a quotation.
Charles de lint once said: “That’s the thing about magic; you’ve got to know it’s still here, all around us, or it just stays invisible for you.” Let me show you what he means..5. Explain you have a dilemma.
Create a problem, and then propose a solution. Suggest that what you want to show them is very secret and special: ‘You know, many magicians have asked me never to show this magic trick to the public..’

6. Begin with a scene.
Imagine what it was like being a slave building the pyramids in Egypt, thousands of years ago..
7. Give them an anecdote.Tell a short story, setting a scene from your childhood, your first experience of magic or how you became a magician.
Using a hook to introduce your magic, or a specific magic trick can be much more effective than simply saying; “and for my next trick”. As a magician, you are also a storyteller. Give your magic tricks a context and a purpose for being performed. The results will surprise you.

Why Magicians Should Talk Less and Listen More

by Merchant of Magic Leave a Comment

Magicians stop talkingMany magicians find that they practice a magic trick until it seems to flow perfectly, but when it comes to a live performance, things don’t go as well as they should. There’s a BIG difference between live performance and a practice session. We are going to recommend that you change how you practice your magic tricks. It’s a very small change to make, but should give you a huge step forward in your performance.

A magic trick practiced Vs. a magic trick performed.

Magicians build up to a magical event happening, after all, that’s the whole point of their magic tricks. However, many magic tricks have several magical events happening in a series. When magicians practice a magic trick they usually do it in private, towards an imaginary audience. It’s this audience of ourselves, silent in its reaction, that causes us a problem. We already know what’s going to happen, and our attention is on the next part of the routine to be performed. We don’t react to each magical event and give ourselves the same feedback that a live audience does. We run through our practice sessions, mastering the moves, then work through our rehearsal sessions, polishing the routine, but we never work on the feedback we will get when we perform. Here’s Dominic Reyes talking about this, and how it relates to magicians performing for the public:

During a performance, it’s tempting to move on to the next magical event in the routine, without stopping to allow the reactions of the spectators to play out. As soon as the coin vanishes, or the playing card changes, we start talking about what will happen next. We sweep the spectators along to the next part of the act.

Being eager to move on, prevents the spectators from giving your magic the reaction it deserves. It reduces the impact of a magicians magic tricks and turns the performance into a passive form of entertainment. Being a magician is as much about engagement with the audience as the magic tricks themselves.

DO THIS: Make a note of each magical event that happens in a few of your favourite routines. As you practice them, pause at the moment that something magical happens. Relax. Imagine making eye contact with some of the spectators and smiling. Make a little comment and imagine an answer to it. Breathe. Then move on to the next phase of the trick.

When you perform, pause after something magical happens. You want to slow down the performance, and also focus the spectators minds on what they have just witnessed.

Use the moment of misdirection to set up the next phase if needed, but once you are in the clear, smile at someone and laugh with them. Make a comment or answer a question. Make your audience feel that this isn’t a magicians stage show, up close. You are with them, performing something that they also play a part in. You will be very pleased with the results!

Copying Magicians – How to Develop Your Performing Style

by Merchant of Magic 3 Comments

Copying magicians you admire can help you develop your own unique performing style as a magician.

Which magicians do you most admire? Which performers or sleight of hand experts really get you excited about magic? It’s not a good idea to become a clone or duplicate of someone else, but it’s fine to learn as many lessons as possible from how others present their magic.

To create your own performing style, study the personas and performances of your favourite magicians:

Why do their magic tricks keep your attention?

How do they pull you into their magic routines?

How do they construct their acts?

How do they excite you with their magic techniques?

How do they use scripting techniques like metaphors, power words, and suggestion?

How does their presentation make their magic routines stand out?

How do they relate with their audiences?

Why are they charismatic?

Dominic Reyes talks about how you can use the techniques and performances of other magicians that you admire, to create your own unique performing persona:

DO THIS:Create your own performing style by studying your favourite magicians and absorbing their knowledge and experience. Don’t outright copy magicians.. Instead, learn from them. Pick the methods and approach you like from each of your favourite magicians to create your own personal style; and let your own talent and personality express itself.
