Event Magicians – Magic Tricks for Long Tables with Low Light

by Dominic Reyes Leave a Comment

Event Magicians Performing at long tables in low light

Large event magicians have to perform in difficult situations. Low light and long tables of guests can be a challenge. Here’s some tips to make performing magic easier in those situations.

If you are performing magic commercially, sooner or later you will be booked to perform at an event that is not set up with a magician in mind. Low lighting, loud music and long tables of guests present several obstacles for event magicians.

Dominic Reyes recorded this video at an event with just those conditions. He describes how he deals with the situation to get the best results:

At loud, dark, crowded gigs, event magicians need to have sets of tricks that fit the following 5 standards:

1) Highly visual magic

2) Easy to understand without audible instructions

3) Quick lead in to the first magical event

4) Easy to stop and start if interruptions happen

5) Not dependent on table space

Here’s a few magic tricks that are tried and tested to meet those conditions:

Extreme Burn

Invisible Deck

Sponge Balls

Ring Flight

Chop Cup

Splash Bottle

The Key

Arthur

How Event Magicians handle long tables

A long table presents and interesting challenge for magicians. Access is limited, and becuase of the arrangment of the spectators, it’s simply not possible to present to the whole table, unless there are no distractions and you can perform to the whole table as a ‘show’.

The secret to working a long table is to break it into sections. Devide it into parts of around 6 to 8 people and treat that as it’s own distinct group. Perform to those people than move down the table to the next section. You need to perform 2 distinct sets of tricks, alternating them between sections. Because you are performing different tricks to the next secrion, the material is fresh for each group, and spectators from the pervious group that want to see more, can still watch more new magic. You will be repeating tricks 12-16 chairs down the table, so there is little danger of anyone seeing the same trick twice.

How to Contact Companies to Hire You as a Magician

by Merchant of Magic 1 Comment

Contact Companies to Hire You as a MagicianFranklin asks:

‘My question is regarding corporate engagements or to be more precise ‘How do you get to find out the names of the decision makers in multi-national companies?’ I’m talking about the type of companies that do have conferences at various times throughout the year, as well as awards and various other types of dinners for their staff and clients.’

Franklin, that’s a great question! But we need to clarify something first. There is a big difference between contacting small and medium size business’s, and multi-national companies. The approach for each can be quite different.

Why it’s so hard to get booked directly by multi-national companies.

Multinational companies put on a lot of events throughout the year. 9 times out of 10 they use event production companies and entertainment agencies to organize the whole of their events. The reason you may be having trouble getting through to someone is because there isn’t anyone at the company that deals with it. It’s outsourced.

You may be successful by contacting the companies and asking which department deals with events planning, or which company they use for events. You may just get some bookings from it, but it’s just as likely that the next time they run an event, it will be outsourced and that event planning company will use its regular magicians.

High profile magicians tend to get work like this from their agents, They don’t bring it in themselves. An agent builds relationships with event organizers that run the whole event for their clients.

If you are looking to get work from that sector, then you need to build relationships with entertainment agencies just as much as trying to get booked directly by the companies that use them. Some Internet searches will bring up a few of the big agencies.
Most magicians do get some work from large companies independently. However, it’s more common to be approached by an agent directly for a specific event. Sometimes an agent may have trouble supplying their regular magicians for a specific date, and then they may look online or ask other magicians they trust for a recommendation. Their next port of call will be to check out your website. Having a website that promotes your services is essential.

Small and medium size companies.

For smaller companies, you can contact them directly and explain that you are a supplier and need to reach the person who is in charge of event planning. It’s also useful to look at Linked-in and build a network through there. Be sure to connect with companies you have worked for in the past and you can build up a referral reputation over time.

The International Federation of Magic Societies – FISM was hosted in England last week. Magicians from all over the world converged on the magic convention to compete in the most respected magic competition in the world.

FISM was founded in 1948 to bring together every 3 years, national and international magic clubs, representing over 50,000 magicians from 32 countries.

UK magicians did very well this year, with Matthew Wright is gaining 2nd place in the Parlor Magic Competition and Guy Barett places 3rd in the Illusions category.

As well as a stunning magic competition, FISM is renowned for a great week of magic lectures and a huge range of magic dealers demonstrating their new products. In the weeks following the competition, there are usually a huge range of new magic tricks released to the magic community, so it’s a great time to refresh parts of your act!. Congratulations to everyone who took part in FISM. The next convention will run in 2015
