Advice and Support for Magicians

Bicycle Cards UK Team Up With Merchant of Magic

Bicycle Cards UK

Merchant of Magic is pleased to become the official sponsor for Bicycle Cards UK.

Our sponsorship will mean that they can focus on what they do best – producing high quality magic news and especially magic reviews – with a particular emphasis on close up and card magic.

It’s very rare that MoM sponsors a website. It has to be something special, and fully in line with our goal:

To help magicians improve their practice and performance of magic.

MoM don’t want just another site posting ‘adverts’ for the magic shop. We were attracted to Bicycle Cards UK because of the CONTENT. They produce honest, real world reviews and articles for magicians and card collectors.

Bicycle Cards will maintain their full editorial independence so they can ‘tell it as it is’ when it comes to reviewing.

Our support will help them to produce exclusive new content – including some amazing interviews with magic creators.Bicycle Cards UK will also be running a regular competition every few months with prizes and give-aways from Merchant of Magic.

So.. Take a look at the new Bicycle Cards UK site. It’s already stuffed full of articles and news that will help you improve your magic practice and performance.

How to Get Sponsorship as a Magician – Do You Need a Sponsor?

by Merchant of Magic 1 Comment

Magicians sponsorshipAkash writes:

‘My name is Akash and I am a 13 year old magician who has been performing for 6 months.

I have already performed at 2 weddings, a reception, and a youth summer fair. I will be performing on in December at a Children’s party.  I would love to go further in magic and even have a career in magic, but I believe for that to happen I would need sponsorship as a magician.’

We think it’s awesome that you are being so proactive getting out there and performing after just 6 months of learning magic. So many kids learn magic and just show it to their friends and family. This motivation to start performing will really help you gain valuable experience that you could never learn just from magic DVDs and books. Keep it up!

The good news, is that you don’t need sponsorship at all. You really only need two things to be successful as a professional magician:

The commitment to practice and create a good commercial set of routines.
Here’s a magic secret: One of the best things about learning magic, is that it’s all about your time, not your pocket. You can’t buy yourself into being a great magician. Yes, there are magic shops full of the latest magic tricks, and some of these can be very expensive. But you don’t need any of them to be brilliant. You can create a stunning professional magic act with just a few everyday objects around your house. In fact, as Max Maven demonstrated in his excellent mentalism tutorial Nothing, you don’t need anything at all, just your voice

Now that’s not to say that learning magic is cheap, it’s actually very expensive in another way..

Your time!

Learning to master your magic takes time, and lots of it. You need to commit to regular practice every day. For you, times not as much of a problem.  Compared to older magicians, you have years ahead of you to practice and perform, and you will still be younger than most magicians who have yet to take their first jump into performing for the public.

Once you get going with an act that doesn’t use expensive props and gimmicks, you will be bringing in a fee for your performances that you can spend on introducing a few more pricey props into the mix.

The ambition to market your magic directly.

This one is far harder to master than being limited by your income. But Akash, you are already there! Just the fact that you have contacted a business to ask for sponsorship as a magician, is more than most of the people, that are practicing magic, will ever do.

The bit that’s missing from most magic trick instructions, is how to find an audience for the magic trick you are learning. It’s crazy in a way, as that’s just as important as the method of the trick. So many people are learning with no audience, or a plan on how to get one.

But you sir, are doing it right!

You understand that you need to get out there and ask for sponsorship and work. Not from magic shops, but from local companies and organisations that may book you.

In the history of the world,  it’s never been easier for anyone to contact companies and get their message to the people that make the decisions. There really isn’t anything stopping you from sending out your details to a few companies EVERY DAY.

Contact some entertainment agent’s and introduce yourself. They may use you for some events where you fit the brief the client is looking for. More importantly, you start a relationship with them, they have you on file, and in the future, you can remind them that you approached them when you were 13. That’s enough to make them take the time to watch your show reel, if anything, just to see how you have come on since then.

Don’t worry about your age working against you.

Yes, it’s a disadvantage in some ways, but not a permanent one, I can assure you sadly. But you also have an amazing advantage. If your magic is good and your presentation professional, you are good PR for a company to give you sponsorship as a magician. Having you perform at their event, is a great topic for press releases and a story angle for the journalists covering the event. Make sure you point that out subtly when you pitch to them for work. When you do your charity gig, make sure you look for any reporting that has taken place that mentions you. Cuttings like this can show a prospective company, how your magic is not only entertaining, but also has human interest of an up and coming magician.

Don’t forget to study
You know you want to succeed as a magician, but remember that it’s vital that you focus on your school studies too. You need to keep as many doors open in your future as  you possibly can, so magic study is no replacement to school work.

Keep it up Akash, as your attitude makes us think you will definitely be one to watch in the future!

How to Get Magic Shop Sponsorship – Reviewing Magic Tricks on YouTube

by Merchant of Magic 2 Comments

Finding free magic tricks to review on your Youtube magic show

The Merchant of Magic receives requests for magic shop sponsorship on an almost daily basis. That’s great news, and we love that YouTube shows are happy to review magic tricks and products for magicians on their channels. In fact, if we like the shows we may be happy to recommend the channel to our visitors and help you promote the show.

If you broadcast on YouTube, and would like to review items that are supplied by The Merchant of Magic, we can help you receive magic items from the magic shop without any cost to you.

Step 1: Become a Merchant of Magic Partner.

Click here to learn how to create your own personal links to the Merchant of Magic shop website or to any specific product that is on the site. It’s very quick and easy to set up.

Step 2: Select some items you already own and want to review.

Look though the magic shop and create a list of items that you already own and that you think that your viewers will enjoy watching you review. We recommend that you discuss both the positive and the negative aspects of items, from your own experience. Be totally honest and also choose items you don’t like as well as those that you love. When reviewing items, the best ones are often those that you are very familiar with and have performed, so starting with items you have owned for a while is the a sure fire way to make a great first impression with your reviews and give advice and opinions based on regular  use. Those items will often be ones that you care about, as you own them. This really makes them the best choice to begin with.

Step 3: Create Affiliate links for each of the review products

Once you have a MoM Affiliate account, you can make a unique link for each of your review items.

Magic Shop Youtube sponsorship

Step 4: Add the product links into your YouTube videos

You could simply make one link for the main page of MagicShop.co.uk that you can mention to your viewers in the video. A much more popular method is to add the links to each product you review into the video description text. Then your viewers can click on the link after watching the video and find out more about the item and order it if they wish.

Step 5: Earn commission

Each time one of your viewers clicks one of your affiliate links and places an order, you get commission for the sale. That’s on the whole order, not just the item you reviewed. You also get a commission each time that person returns to the shop for the next 30 days! You can login to your affiliate account at any time and monitor how well you are doing.

Step 6: Receive magic items from us to review.

Once you have created some reviews of items you already own, it’s time to start reviewing new releases! You can use the affiliate commission you earn to order any items from the magic shop. This builds up very quickly as you post more reviews over time and get more subscribers. Each video you publish continues to bring in the commission to you as long as you keep its published. After a while, as you add more and more reviews, you will be getting a significant amount of revenue from your affiliate links. You will probably find that you can order more new magic than you can review, so you have the option of banking the excess commission instead of using it all to get magic. This will really help with the running costs of an established YouTube show.

Step 7: Promote your show

Make sure you promote your show as much as possible. Advertise it on popular forums and blogs. Be sure to send us a link to each new show as we may be able to help promote it too. If we like it, we can blog about your show to our subscribers. They will love to watch your reviews as well!

Important

Remember not to expose the secret of the trick when you review it. Give your HONEST opinion of a magic trick or item. Feature both the positive and the negative points about it in your opinion. Remember, if you give some criticism of someones trick, be respectful to them. Not being a fan of an item is fine, but be polite and make sure you give a valid reason for your opinions, viewers will be far more interested in your reasons as well as your overall impression.
