Best Magic Tricks Awards 2016

The Best Magic Tricks of 2016

2016 brought us a range of diverse magic not seen in recent years. Most areas of magic received innovation, and although there were quite a few lackluster releases, the year saw some huge hits!

How the award winning magic tricks are selected.

MoM is a magic shop and market place for magicians. So, right from the start we should point out that we stock most of the items that have won a best magic tricks award. However, Merchant of Magic is a ‘whole of market’ magic shop, with over 27,000 different magic tricks on sale. Merchant of Magic accepts no payment from manufacturers for listing in this award list. We have not included many items that are produced by The Merchant of Magic, so as to be as impartial as possible.

The winners of a best magic trick 2016 award are chosen from these sources of opinion:

  • Customer feedback.
  • Quantity of sales.
  • Level of returns.
  • The views of magic shop demonstrators.
  • Reviews and feedback from magic forums.
  • Real world testing by professional magicians.

The list is in no particular order.

Svengali Force Pad

There are so many applications for the Svengali Force pad for both complete beginners through to professional entertainers. Hands down this utility device wins an award this year!  Find out more

Steam 2.0

Steam 2.0

Steam 2.0 arrived at the beginning of 2016 and sold out consistently all through the year. Here’s why: You instantly know what she secretly wrote on a blank business card… while the face-down card is covered by her hand — or a bunch of hands — or even a book! This REALLY works and is basically self-working..    Find out more

The Vanishing Ring Box

Vanishing Ring Box

Magicians have had a love/hate relationship with Sansmind, the makers of this magician’s ring box. When The vanishing Ring Box was released, it was marketed in their PRO SERIES, but that did not stop magicians worrying that the product was nothing more than hype. When The Vanishing Ring Box hit stores, it silenced all the doubters. This delivers the goods and is now a tried and tested prop for many of the worlds best gigging magicians Find out more.

Strongman - Best Magic Tricks

Strongman by Jimmy Strange

Jimmy Strange’s unique and twisted take on what magicians can do is clearly evident in the release of Strongman. Nut and bolt effects tend to focus on a nut moving up and down a bolt by itself, Strongman moves in another direction, giving magicians the power to hand out a nut and bolt for examination, moments before the magician bends it slowly at the fingertips. The design and production of Strongman is stunning, and it’s owned by some of the leading magicians in magic including Dynamo magician impossible. Easy to do, self contained and very entertaining.   Find out more.

Sucker Punch - Best Magic Tricks

Sucker Punch

A decent gaffed coin set can cost hundreds, so when Sucker Punch came out, magicians thought this was amazing value. A full set of some of the best coin gaffs, recreated with poker chips, together with brilliant tuition videos by Eric Jones makes this a must have for anyone wanting strong poker chip or coin magic tricks. The set is well made and the chips can even be customised.  Find out more.

Magma Best magic tricks 2016

Magma

Quite unique.. Magma was created by Kyle Marlett as a ‘special effect’ rather than a trick in itself. It looks awesome, as the magician makes a fist and it slows white hot! Very simple to use, and easy to add to so many effects, when you want  to signal ‘the moment the magic happens’, Magma is a lot of fun to perform and gets wonderful reactions. Find out more.

Fall Best Magic TricksFall

Psychokinetic pens are not new.. But having one that actually looks good, has only just happened. FALL is a very clever and practical self toppling sharpie pen and it works like a charm. Fall was a HUGE seller in 2016, as magicians who has been using older style pen gimmicks upgrades to this more natural design. It’s a classic effect, but a bang up to date face lift. Magic Gifts For An Adult Beginner Magician

by Dominic Reyes Leave a Comment

Best Magic Gifts For Magicians

Ben Anderson writes “I wondered if you could suggest a few magic gifts for an adult beginner?“

Many thanks for getting in touch. There are some great magic gifts I can suggest here. It does depend on what sort of magic you were looking for. Some magic can be expensive, but takes less skill, some are amazing and will blow peoples minds, but requires lots of practice and dedication. I list a bit of both for you.
Ultimate Street Magic Kit – This is just a bundle of the best selling street magic tricks, it does not come in a box as it is a bundle put together to save you a bit of money.
How to do Street Magic DVD – This is a DVD that teaches street magic tricks, it is aimed at complete beginners, but it has many really high impact magic tricks taught.
This is Mentalism – This is also a DVD aimed at beginners, but teaches tricks that are mind reading based, these are tricks that you would more likely see someone like Derren Brown perform. Read minds, predict things, just generally be a mental genius!
Thumbtipedia – This is a DVD on a magic prop called the Thumb Tip, it is the most versatile magic prop ever created, you can do so much with this little thing it is amazing. Ever wanted to learn how to turn a £5 into a £50? Thumbtipedia will teach you.

Sleight of Hand Tutorials

Card Sleight of Hand Course
The Essential Card Magic Toolbox – This is a HUGE collection of many DVDs all on the topic of sleight of hand with cards. There are many tricks taught, starting with self working tricks to get you up and running, all the way through to advanced sleight of hand tricks. This is a great multi DVD set that leaves no stone unturned.
Card Sleight of Hand – The Basics
Born To Perform Card Magic – This is purely a DVD teaching sleight of hand with cards. You will learn some amazing card tricks, it will require practice, but if you want to change cards on a spectator’s hand or pull a signed card from your shoe, this is how you learn how to do it! You will need a deck of regular playing cards to go with it, I would recommend these: Bicycle Playing Cards
Coin Sleight of Hand
In The Beginning There Were Coins – Again, this is a DVD, purely teaching sleight of hand with coins. Make coins appear, vanish and multiply, this is a really great form of sleight of hand to learn as coins are everywhere, making it possible to always show a little bit of magic wherever you are.
Sponge Magic
Sponge by Jay Noblezada – This is similar to the sleight of hand, you will learn with coins, yet it is easier to learn. Sponge ball magic gets amazing reactions as the magic often happens in the spectator’s hands. You start with one ball and then that multiplies into two, the balls, then vanish from hand to hand and all manner of fun things happens.
These are some of the best tutorials we have for beginners, there are many great individual tricks sold separately, but they will teach you only one trick and that will be all, you can look at some great tricks if you wish (I will list some) but these tricks will only teach you one thing, it will be cool, but that will be all that is taught on the DVD, also you may need to buy some extra bits and bobs to set the trick up, this may be playing cards, banknotes, everyday objects like sugar packets or drinks cans, glue, sticky tape etc.

Here are some single tricks to give as magic gifts:

Sweet Penetration – A signed coin is thrown into a sugar packet
Deceptus – A small object such as a lighter/coin/ring etc is thrown into a drink’s can. The can has to be cut open to get the item out in the end!
Changeling – A banknote trick, two banknotes switch places. One is in your hand, the other is in their hand, yet they magically and impossibly change places.
There are MANY more single effects in our Dynamo and Troy magic sections on our website.

10 Magic Books Every Magician Should Read

by Dominic Reyes 2 Comments

10 Magic Books You Should Read

The Top 10 Magic Books Every Magician Should Read

Ok, We all know that there are way more than 10 magic books every magician SHOULD read.  But people like lists, so here are the top books you should read if you have not read anything before!

As mentioned, these are not the ONLY 10 magic books that every magician should read as knowledge is paramount. The more you read and study,  the more you will expand your knowledge and further  your goal of being a great magician.

The list doesn’t just include books on tricks and how they work, these are important, but there are also books on the theory of magic and the performance of magic which are equally as important. Within the list, we will identify the books as either trick related or theory related. Do not pass up on the theory books, when you have learned enough tricks, (and you will, you may already know too many!) you will realise it isn’t the trick that gets the reactions, it is the performance. You do not learn this in a book of tricks.

So here they are, 10 Magic Books Every Magician Should Read.

magiccompletecourse-small

Magic The Complete Course – This is a great magic book to introduce you to magic. Even if you already know magic you will still learn something from this book. Magic the Complete Course assumes you have no previous knowledge of magic and it is what it says, a complete course. It not only teaches you tricks across multiple platforms, from stage to close up. But it also teaches you other details such as how to perform, at the end of the magic book it gives you examples of great routines you can put together from the tricks you have learned in the book.

royalroad

Royal Road To Card Magic – This is widely known as the go to source for beginning to learn card magic. Nearly every card magician who has emerged over the past 50 years will have studied this book. It is a comprehensive book of some of the most important sleights you can do with a deck of cards.

bobopaperback

Bobo’s Modern Coin Magic – What Royal Road is to for card magic, Bobo’s is for coin magic. Many magicians begin their quest by buying Royal Road to Card Magic and Bobo’s Modern Coin Magic, they kind of go hand in hand. Bobo’s is a great source of learning for all thye sleights/palms/appearances and vanishes you can do with a coin.

57118-full

13 Steps To Mentalism – It seems most genres have their own stand out books, for mentalism it is 13 Steps to Mentalism by Tony Corinda. A great book that takes you through many of the key techniques and methods used by mentalists all over the world. If you have ever had your mind read by someone, the likelihood is that they have read this book!

cardcollegeranget_2

Card College Series – So, this is a series, rather than a single book, so maybe I am bending the rules here a bit. The Card College Series is a much deeper look into all facets of card sleight of hand. If card magic is what you wish to learn and you have soaked up all the information in Royal Road to Card Magic then the Card College series will continue where Royal Road left off. With 5 volumes and other editions under the same branding such as Card College Light (more of a look at self working card magic) Roberto Giobbi has really created a great legacy top leave behind.

artofast3-full

Art of Astonishment Series – Again, I am cheating, this is a series of 3 magic books. But they are GREAT books. Not only are they FULL of creative and fun magic but they are written in a very entertaining way, Paul Harris, the author writes the book as if you are speaking with him and you will find yourself laughing as you read it. The books are full of great material using cards, coins, sweets and more. It has such a eclectic collection of material it is definitely one of the 10 magic books every magician should read.

trickbrai-small

The Trick Brain – The Trick Brain is all about creating magic. We should all take the magic we learn and put our own spin on it, sometimes this will lead to naturally creating something fresh or entirely new (although entirely new is very rare!). The Trick Brain breaks down the creative process within magic and takes a detailed look at how you can go about creating your own routines and tricks. Dariel Fitzkee is a genius at breaking things down into manageable and direct piece of information that are easily processed. Giving you examples of effects and methods and then how to transfer those methods to anything you want.

magicbymi-full

Magic by Misdirection – Magic by Misdirection is another book by Dariel Fitzkee, whatever Dariel did for creativity in the Trick Brain, he does exactly that for misdirection in Magic by Misdirection. Dariel breaks down misdirection into its most basic form and teaches you why it works and how it works. By reading this book you will have a much better idea of how to truly deceive and misdirect someone. This isn’t all about making someone look at something whilst you do something else quickly out of their view. This is about how to completely and truly deceive them, only once you understand what you are trying to portray can you even begin to get to that all encompassing deception that the great magicians all understand so well.

strongmagicbt

Strong Magic – Strong Magic is a book on the theory of magic. It does not teach tricks, what it teaches is much more important though. It teaches you how to present your magic in the strongest fashion possible. What Darwin Ortiz’s aim was when writing this book was to pass on all the knowledge he has accumulated over 20 years of performing and studying what really moves an audience. Do you want spectators to be in awe and disbelief, do you want huge rounds of applause and gasps from your audience, if you do, then before you buy another trick, buy and study Strong Magic.

maximum

Maximum Entertainment – Maximum Entertainment by Ken Weber is another book on the theory of magic. This time it looks more deeply at presenting magic to larger groups and audiences from a stage. All of the information is very important and valuable though. If you read chapters such as the chapter on scripting, you can truly boost your performances from mediocre to powerful. If you are ever looking to perform magic on a stage Maximum Entertainment is the book to read. If you don’t plan to perform magic on stage Maximum Entertainment is still a very great source of valuable information.

So there you have it, 10 Magic Books Every Magician should read. These books have made a real difference to so many magicians. The truth is you should never stop reading or learning if you truly want to be great at what you do. So, go read these ten books and then email us at support@magicshop.co.uk and we will tell you about the next 10 books..
