Magicians Website and Promotion Advice

Martin wants to create a magicians website and turn his magic hobby into an income. He’s not sure about the first step..

Martin write:

‘Hi everyone at Merchant of Magic. The reason for my email is I have been doing magic for quite a few years, and I am really struggling in knowing how I can make my hobby into a career. I have studied a lot of sleight of hand over the years and also purchased so many gimmicked tricks I can’t even count them, but I am struggling to get myself out there. I want to get myself a magicians website made up and start performing. I think I need a bit of help as I’m not great on a computer for a start, and I am not sure the best way to go about getting paid work.

I have contacted a few magicians in Leicester to see if they could mentor me and help me get comfortable performing in front of a crowd as I think that is one of my weak points at this moment in time because of my confidence, but I have had no luck at all and I didn’t know if you could recommend anyone who might be able to help me or if you could give me any advice on were to go from here. Sorry for the long essay it’s just magic means so much to me and I spend so much time, money and effort into it I just want my dream job to come true, thanks for reading this and I hope you can help. – Thank you, Martin.‘

We are often asked for advice by hobbyist wanting to become professional magicians. There is no easy way. Risk is always involved when making a transition like this. However, we can help by listing a few things you should be doing to make that move as smooth and pain-free as possible.

Here are some quick pointers to aim you in the right direction. For more information on turning professional feel free to search our blog here, there are tonnes of great articles that can help.

Magicians Website

If you wish to be professional it is important to have a website, unless you have bookings coming out of your ears (which you may do in time) but as you start out it is important to have a base for all the information about you. It is a great way for people to see you and what your performance is about without meeting up face to face. Your website is worth spending some time and money on. To try to make one yourself with no experience would be a mistake, it would look exactly like that, inexperienced. Your magicians website will reflect on your image as a performer, a clear and organised website that is well put together will in turn make you look organised and professional yourself. Also with regards to the photos, try to have performing photos, not just photos of you with a fan of cards and springing the cards. You want the website to show you as a competent performer, and stylish promo shots can only look good if they are accompanied by great performing shots. The most important point of any magicians website is to clearly display your contact details on every page with a clear call to action running throughout your website. Visitors should be prompted to contact you to find out more and to receive a quote.

Magicians promotional material

This is worth spending some money on the design and look. Business cards and any other branded promo material should all match so that you look like a cohesive brand, this will say you are professional without saying so.

Spend a bit of money on some postcard size flyers to hand out at wedding fairs and other events where you promote yourself. These sorts of things can become part of a promotional pack you can mail people should they wish to have more information about you. You should also have a promotional pack that matches your website design etc that you can email potential clients, again with cohesive branding throughout, so it looks like a brand and not some mish mash of photos and magician’s blurb.

Confidence

Confidence is something everyone should work on unless it comes naturally. The only way to become a more confident magician is to constantly put yourself in uncomfortable situations where you do not feel at ease. You will learn that even a fail is not that bad, and you will begin to not fear them as much. Slowly, over time you will begin to gain positive experiences from these moments of discomfort. Everyone goes wrong at some point; every magician has tricks that fail at some time sooner or later. If you were to speak to any professional magician who makes their living doing magic that said they had never failed in front of many people at some point, they would be lying. You have to realise that things will go wrong, and people will sometimes figure out what you are doing; it is all part and parcel of this career I’m afraid. You do not know what people already know. Maybe one of the spectators is an amateur magician; maybe they have a sibling who has learned and exposed some magic to them. These things happen, sometimes spectators are deliberately difficult, it is all about how you handle the situation, be polite, friendly and have fun and then your spectators will too.

Getting bookings

A good way to start getting bookings is to do as much magic in social situations as possible. For example, if you are out for a drink with friends make sure you show them the magic and look out for anyone else who is trying to see what is going on. Give them a nod and go and show them some magic afterwards. Most people ask if this is what you do for a job, simply say “yes”. Hand out business cards to everyone you perform for. Most people have a friend who is getting married or who has some event coming up, and you will be surprised as to how many people ask.

Learning more about marketing and promotion for magicians

This blog is full of ideas and tips for promoting yourself as a professional magician, however you may want to read a complete system for marketing yourself as a performer, where all the information is in order, and you get templates and a road plan for putting it into practice. It’s worth reading the ebook Highway to Success for a complete guide.

How to Email a Client That Wants to Hire a Magician

by Dominic Reyes Leave a Comment

How to answer a hire a magician email

By Dominic Reyes

What do you include in an email to a client wanting to hire a magician?

The main sales funnel for magicians is their website. Clients wanting to hire a magician will usually check out your website before they contact you, which means that most clients will make their first contact to you via email. It's important to know how to answer emails from people that want to hire you. Here are a few tips:

Keep it brief.

The client contacting you has already checked out your website. If your website has been built correctly it will already have all the information needed, including a section on frequently asked questions. Your response email isn't the time to bombard your client with lots of information about you. Keep the email professional and brief.

Thank them for their time.

The first part of your email should thank the client for contacting you. Make sure you don't miss this out.

Answer their questions fully.

Read through the email carefully, making sure that you have answered all of the questions fully. If you can't answer one of the questions because there is not enough information provided, make sure you ask for more information and explain why.

How did they find out about you.

It's important to ask how the client found you. Your contact source information is valuable to identify where your leads are coming from. It's also a subtle way of suggesting that you are very popular, and that it's highly likely that somebody will have referred you to the client.

Use a call to action.

Make sure your email includes a 'call to action'. A call to action is something that you are asking the client to do. This might be to answer a question, download an e-book about hiring a magician, or to fill in a booking form. By giving the client a call to action you are creating continued communication past this initial email. Your goal is to keep the conversartion going.

Use a third party if possible.

Is it possible that you could use a third party to reply to your emails? Many professional magicians use agents that acts as a third party. If you don't have an agent you may want to get your partner or a trusted friend to act as the third-party and answer your enquiry emails. This allows the quotation to come from somebody other than yourself. That person can answer enthusiastically about your performance, skills, talk about your fees, and recommend your services in a way that you wouldn't be able to do yourself without coming across as slightly big headed. It's very hard to say to your clients that you are an amazing magician. It's much easier if a third party can explain just how awesome you are. If some negotiation about fees needs to take place, a third party can make a deal without you having to seem mercenary or confrontational.

Here's a typical email from a client wanting to hire a magician that you may receive:

Hi Dominic

I'm planning a 40th birthday party on the 25th July in Walton Ash. I thought having a magician to entertain the guest would be a great idea. Can you let me know the cost for a couple of hours magic please.

Thanks

William Spiget

This would be a typical reply to the above email:

Hi William,

Thank you for contacting me about attending your party on the 25th July. I've checked my diary and I am currently available. (The thank you)

How did you hear about me? Was I recommended to you? (The referral)

My fee to provide walk-around close up magic is £xxx for one hour or £xxxx for 2.5 hours. (The question answered)

Will your guests be having table service, a buffet, or will it be drinks and canapes? (Call to action)

Best wishes

Dominic Reyes

Follow up.

It's vital that you remember to follow up after you have sent a quotation email. Wait 1 or 2 days and then send an email checking that they have received your quotation, and asking if they have any further questions. I can't stress how important this is. So many magicians don't follow up. They send out a quote, sit back, and hope that it will lead to a booking. Taking just a moment to follow up will often be the difference between a booking and a missed opportunity.

How Magicians Can Get Audience Reaction Photos and Videos

by Dominic Reyes Leave a Comment

Dominic Reyes performing reactions

By Dominic Reyes

How do magicians get audience reaction photos and videos of their magic when doing close up magic?

That's a common question and I'm going to share with you something that I've been using for a few weeks now and know you will love. But first, lets look at the traditional ways to get audience reaction pictures:

The event photographer.

Teaming up with the offical event photographer is always a good idea when you arrive at a magic gig. Make sure you get the persons business card, and that you ask if you can have access to some of the photographs after the event. Usually the event photographer will be happy to supply you with some of the photographs but may ask a small fee in return. The main problem with this is that you will onlybe featured in a small part of the event, so the photographer will have a limited range of images that involve you. The photographs also tend to be of you, rather than the audience reaction. It's a good idea to speak to the photographer first and ask them to take pictures of your audience smiling, laughing and reacting to your magic.

The spectator as photographer.

I know a few magicians that will ask one of the spectators to take some photographs of the magic happening, or to shoot a small video on their phone. This can be a good idea, as long as it doesn't get in the way of the spectator having fun watching the magic. Some magicians feel uncomfortable asking spectators for this. Spectator filming has the same problem as that of using an event photographer, in that a lot of the footage will be of you rather than the audience reaction.

The Autographer Camera.

I purchased an Autographer camera for a skiing trip recently, and I'm really impressed with its value for magicians wanting to get audience reaction photos and videos. I should point out that I've have not been paid, or entered into a commercial agreement to promote a specific device or product mentioned in this post.

Autographer is a small device that clips to your clothing, or can be worn around the neck on a cord. It's a camera that will automatically decide when a picture is worth taking. You just turn it on, clip it onto your clothing and forget about it. It will start taking photographs using five high tech sensors to determine when something new and interesting needs to be captured.

Magicians using Autographer

To road test Autographer, I clipped in on at a drinks and canapés party in Central London. Here's a short video of me performing close magic with Autographer clipped to my suit jacket top pocket:

That was a fun gig, made especially so because I was working alongside Ben Williams from the Professional Magicians Agency (you see us discussing magic in the video) He's one of the best magicians, and creative minds that I work alongside whenever I can.

The image quality.

You'll notice that many of the shots are either out of focus, or have blur. That's understandable given the low lighting and the fact that both myself and the guests are constantly moving. In that gig, Autographer took over 1500 images. I removed many of the shots that didn't show anything of interest, but I've intentionally left in lots of blurred and out of focus shots. I want the footage to look organic, live, and capturing the 'reality' of the event. You could go through the images and just pull out a few perfect audience reaction shots if you prefer. Those could then be tweaked using photoshop to correct colour and lighting. I don't personally think that's my goal with a large bank of images played together in a stop frame video.

For magicians, Autographer creates a gritty, live action video that is not supposed to be perfectly shot. It also will give you a few excellent, clear and focused audience reaction shots you can save as distinct images. As you wear the camera over time, that bank of 'perfect images' will become very large indeed.

You can check the photographs that Autographer has taken using an app on your phone. If you know something cool is about to happen, you can set Autographer to instantly take a series of photos. You can turn the camera off and on whenever you like, or just forget about it, and let it capture every audience reaction.

You can find out more about Autographer on the Autographer website.

As well as the Autographer device, you also get easy to use software for the Mac or PC that will allow you to download the images, edit, save and delete them. You can then stitch them together into an animated gif or video that can be shared online. Adding music to the video is easy and creates a lovely recap of the whole gig.

Tips for magicians using Autographer.

Make sure you get permission from the event organise to film at the event. Usually there will already be a photographer or a cameraman filming the guests, so it will not usually be a problem.

Don't try and hide the Autographer camera. Just clip it on and forget about it. Spectator's may notice it and ask what is. There is a setting on the device to select if you would like the camera to flash a light each time it takes an image, or you can set it to show nothing at all. Tell them that it's a camera and that some of the event is being photographed. The host of the event will be receiving a copy. Asked them if they would like their picture taken, and if they decline just close the camera lens.

I've been approaching groups and starting to perform magic, then mentioning that the event is being photgraphed and they may be caught on camera watching me perform. So far everybody seems to be fine with that. Make sure that the cleint/host of the event is happy for you to use the footage.

If anyone has a problem with you filming make sure you stop immediately. You can delete any photos you had instantly using your phone app. This is very rare because you're performing at a public event, and photos and videos are already happening.

Check and delete Autographer images.

When you go through all of the audience reaction footage, you going to have hundreds of photographs. Make sure you go through each one carefully. The Autographer software makes this very easy. Remember that you are a magician and you need to make sure that magic secrets are not exposed in the images that you take. A close attention to the times that you are queitly resetting in the corner. Some of your images will capture magician only angles, so make sure each image is checked.

Because you're capturing live events, many of the images will be out of focus or blurred. You can keep some of these in as they given an organic feel to the footage, but remove any shots that are too dark or obscured.

What magicians can do with Autographer images.

As you use Autographer at your close up magic gigs and shows, you will build up a huge quantity of performing pictures that show great audience reaction. Here's some ways to use them in your magicians marketing.

1) Save audience reaction photos and videos to use on your website or as promotional material

2) Create a fly on the wall video of the whole event and send it to the client as a follow up thank you gift.

3) Create a website or blog of each gig you do. Invite the guests to visit it to see if they feature in one of your videos or audience reaction photos. Use this to pass on your business details.

4) Create a Youtube channel or instagram account of your performing videos and audience reaction photos. Show prospective clients what they can expect, and how much their guests will love your magic.

5) Study the footage to check audience reaction. Use this feedback to perfect your performing and presentation techniques.

6) Build in a magic trick into the footage, so the viewers get a magicial event happening, as they watch the footage.

Here's a few individual shots I saved from my gig last night:

Tips for capturing audience reactions.

Once you have a capture device set up, there are a few tips to make sure you capture some useable audience reactions:

Camera location.

Make sure that the camera is positioned so it sees from your point of view. Ideally the camera should be attached to you and pointing forward. Clipping it onto your top jacket pocket, or wearing it on a cord are ideal. If you have to wear a security badge at the event, use the cord as a handy mount for your camera.

Focus of attention.

The images need to be the audience reactions, not the magic tricks you are performing. Time the images to capture the moment the magic trick reaches it's climax. Images of a magician holding playing cards, or talking to the spectators may seem to make sense to you, but viewers that don't know what is happending may not understand what is going on in the picture.

Aim for images of people smiling, laughing, or looking shocked. The goal is to communicate how much emotion and energy your performance generated at the party.

The magic tricks.

Choose a few magic tricks that have a funny ending, or that will shock the spectators. Mentalism may have a stong impact, but it can sometimes fail to create a pronounced physical reaction. Choose magic tricks that create energy to give you interesting audience reactions.

Interact.

Create action within the group. High five a spectator during the reaction moment. Make a positive comment when a spectator becomes animated during a magic trick climax. Use cues and prompts to indicate that it's acceptable to physically respond to the magic. Whenever possible, end a few magic tricks in an applause cue position. The goal is to nurture a physical reaction from the group.

Dominic Reyes

I hope this helps you.

Best wishes as always

Dominic Reyes
