How does Oz Pearlam do his magic tricks

Magician and mentalist Oz Pearlman amazed the judges on America's Got Talent

By Dominic Reyes

Check out Oz Pearlman's brilliant performance on America's Got Talent. It's a valuable lesson on presentation:

Oz Pearlman isn't just a talented magician and mentalist, he's a highly respected magic triainer and lecturer on the subject of sleight of hand.

Watch his performance again. What does it teach you? He's relaxed, confident and most of all, he looks like he WANT'S to be doing what he is doing. He's having fun and it comes across in his performance. That presentation isn't just luck. It's the result of performing the material over and over again both in private and in live performance. That natural style is what you get from performing your magic live, often, and to people you don't know. It's the final step in every magicians training: Performance.

Want to present your magic as smoothly as Oz did? Get out and start performing live. Perform the same tricks over and over again in as many live situations as possible. That process will remove any nervousness you have, give you the perfect lines and comebacks, and show you subtle comments and convincers you can add to your presentation to give it more impact.

How does Oz Pearlman do his magic tricks?

The same way he always does, there's nothing new there outside of his working material and it shows. He's performed this material for many years and it's made him totally comfortable with it. That's the difference between a magician who is constantly playing with new magic tricks and one that spends a great deal of time with a few effects performed countless times.

Event Magicians – Magic Tricks for Long Tables with Low Light

by Dominic Reyes Leave a Comment

Event Magicians Performing at long tables in low light

Large event magicians have to perform in difficult situations. Low light and long tables of guests can be a challenge. Here’s some tips to make performing magic easier in those situations.

If you are performing magic commercially, sooner or later you will be booked to perform at an event that is not set up with a magician in mind. Low lighting, loud music and long tables of guests present several obstacles for event magicians.

Dominic Reyes recorded this video at an event with just those conditions. He describes how he deals with the situation to get the best results:

At loud, dark, crowded gigs, event magicians need to have sets of tricks that fit the following 5 standards:

1) Highly visual magic

2) Easy to understand without audible instructions

3) Quick lead in to the first magical event

4) Easy to stop and start if interruptions happen

5) Not dependent on table space

Here’s a few magic tricks that are tried and tested to meet those conditions:

Extreme Burn

Invisible Deck

Sponge Balls

Ring Flight

Chop Cup

Splash Bottle

The Key

Arthur

How Event Magicians handle long tables

A long table presents and interesting challenge for magicians. Access is limited, and becuase of the arrangment of the spectators, it’s simply not possible to present to the whole table, unless there are no distractions and you can perform to the whole table as a ‘show’.

The secret to working a long table is to break it into sections. Devide it into parts of around 6 to 8 people and treat that as it’s own distinct group. Perform to those people than move down the table to the next section. You need to perform 2 distinct sets of tricks, alternating them between sections. Because you are performing different tricks to the next secrion, the material is fresh for each group, and spectators from the pervious group that want to see more, can still watch more new magic. You will be repeating tricks 12-16 chairs down the table, so there is little danger of anyone seeing the same trick twice.

Dangers of Learning Magic Tricks with a Mirror

Learning Magic Tricks with a Mirror

How to Practice Magic Tricks Part 2 : Avoiding the Dangers of Learning Magic Tricks with a Mirror

In part 2 of the video mini series on How to Practice magic tricks, Dominic Reyes recorded this short video about some problems to avoid when using a mirror when learning magic tricks:

You can easily build your own three section close up mirror very cheaply. A home made mirror can often be better for practice than a shop brought version. Learn how to build your own close up mirror here.

The most common mistake beginners make when using a practice mirror is to build in 'mirror tells'. Every time a difficult move is repeated, the magician closes his or her eyes for an instant. It's as if they don't want to see themselves mess up the move. Over time this 'blink' becomes ingrained and automatic. To avoid this, it's important to video your performance at regular intervals so you can check that you are not closeing your eyes when you perform a sleight.
