How to Find an Audience for Your Magic Tricks

A Magicians Audience

Richard writes: 'I've been practicing magic for a few years, but only performing to my family. How do I find an audience for my magic tricks?'

Nice work Richard! You've been practicing your magic  over the long term, and that shows a real commitment to develop as a magician. Like many people, you have reached the point where you have  run out of new people to see your tricks. After all, magic needs fresh eyes because a magic trick is never as strong when it's repeated to the  same person. Lets look at some ways you can start performing to a wider  audience.

Dominic Reyes recorded a short video in which he talks about finding an audience for your magic tricks:

In a nutshell, it's all about reaching out to the community. You already have an audience that would love to see your magic. It doesn't have to be a commercial transaction as the real value for you initially is  experience. Start looking for an audience for your magic tricks amongst  the charity and support sector. Study the 'what's on' guide to look for events that might like to 'bolt on' some close up magic. Advertised  events may be at a stage where they have already arranged the entertainment, but that should not stop you. The goal is to make contact with the organisers and introduce yourself. When the best season of  events start to be planned, you can recontact and be at the front of their minds, when they are doing serious planning.

The secret is to MAKE CONTACT. The world will not come to you, all by itself.

Introduce yourself and become known in those circles. If you make an effort to put yourself out there as a possible entertainment choice, you will land some gigs sooner or later.

Remember to be active in the magic community. Join a local magic club and be INVOLVED. You will have fun, learn, and develop an understanding of your local areas market for magicians.

How to Be Yourself as a Magician – Dominic Reyes Video

by Dominic Reyes 3 Comments

Be a unique magician, Be Yourself

The Merchant of Magic Team are often asked questions about how to create a performing persona as a magician. Many magicians that have yet to perform their magic tricks to an audience worry about how to present themselves in an entertaining way.

Dominic Reyes has recorded a short video, in which he talks about how to present yourself in an authentic way, yet maintain a professional and entertaining persona as a magician:

4 Quick Tips on how to be yourself when you perform as a magician:

1) Most magicians, unless they have a specific character that dictates their performance, just need to be themselves. An energetic, happy, and enthusiastic version of yourself.

2) Try to avoid stock jokes and one liners, they usually come across as fake, unless they have been cleverly built into your presentation in a way that perfectly matches your personality.

3) Assume that the group of spectators already loves magic, and can't wait to see you perform. Appraoch with a sence of fun an excitment about the magic you are about to show them.

4) Remember that a close up magic presentation is really a conversation. Your smiles and eye contact are just as important as the magic trick you are showing. People want an interaction with someone they like, far more than the trick itself. Your personality needs to be authentic, so it feels genuine. It's very easy to spot a fake persona.

A Few Things to Avoid Adding to Your Card Magic Tricks

by Dominic Reyes 2 Comments

Card Magic Tricks - Simple and Clear

When you perform card magic tricks, are you tempted to add in additional cuts and flourishes to demonstrate your skill with playing cards?

These demonstrations of skill can delight audiences, and quickly establish you as a competent magician. However, it's important to understand that even the most advances and impressive playing card flourish could hurt the dramatic impact of a card magic trick, if it's used in the wrong place.

Dominic Reyes recorded this short video in which he talks about the time and place for flourishing within the performance of a card magic trick:

So, when is it the right time to perform flourishes with your cards?  After all, these moves take considerable time and commitment to master.  Dominic suggests that the best time for these demonstrations is BETWEEN  your tricks, rather than when you handle the playing cards during an  effect.

Anything that is unnecessary to moving the magic  trick forward to it's conclusion is reducing the clarity of the effect  for the spectator. The playing cards or deck of cards should be handled  as little as possible, and with clear movement and minimal action.  By avoiding flourishes and trick cuts as you shuffle and handle the  cards, you reduce the possible 'points of method' that the spectators  can jump on as the moment something sneaky took place.

Using  demonstrations of card manipulation as you move from one card magic trick  to another may work much better. It can help create a flow and pace to  bridge between your individual tricks, keep the spectators engaged, and  also appear to be magical events in their own right. By making your  flourishing separate and distinct from your tricks, you avoid the  flourish being mistaken for the mechanical method of the trick you are  presenting.
