How to Introduce a Magic Trick – Advice from Dee Christopher

by Merchant of Magic 5 Comments

Dee Christopher magic secretsWe often get asked for advice on how to improve the script or ‘patter’ that a magician is using to introduce a magic trick they are performing. So many magic tricks are presented with what boils down to a simple description of what is happening and what the spectator should do:

‘Here’s a deck of cards, pick one and remember it. I’m going to read your mind… 10 of clubs  Tada!!!’

Your presentation of your magic tricks could easily be SO much better than this. I caught up with top alternative mentalist and magician Dee Christopher, who is an expert on the subject, to find out how we can make these introductions better.

Dominic Reyes: One of the questions we get asked often at the Merchant of Magic is how to improve the scripts or patter that magicians use to present their magic tricks. Do you have some advice you can share on this?
Dee Christopher: Garrett Thomas teaches that:
Every movement in a sleight of hand magic trick needs to have a purpose and a reason for it to happen.
But it wouldn’t stop there. The words you use can have just as much power at the sleight of hand you perform. You will improve your magic by making sure that each psychological action you take and every word you say will increase the impact of a magic trick on your audiences.
Dominic: So with that, you mean that even statements within your ‘patter’ that don’t relate directly to the instructions you need to give the spectator, could be constructed to improve a trick?
Dee: Yes, but it’s important that you first ensure that you have a proper understanding of your character and the abilities you claim to have. This is important so you can create justifications to support those abilities in the mind of the spectator. Once you understand who you are and how you are usually perceived, this is a great way to instill belief in your spectators.
Dominic: Can you give us an example?
Dee: Sure, we can use ‘power statements’ to assume implied belief in the magic we are presenting. It’s creating belief through the acceptance of belief. This technique can easily be added to the start of any magic trick or metalism routine. Let’s look at adding a question in your introduction of a Mentalism effect:

The Definition = Creation Idea & The Sheep Concept.

It was Kenton Knepper’s work that introduced me to Definition = Creation, the concept is that by defining something, you’re giving it weight to be accepted as reality in the spectator’s minds.

The Sheep concept is what I’ve called the strange fact that people generally act like sheep. Not in the literal sense, but on a whole, people let the majority’s thoughts influence their thoughts. Social convention, norms, etc. If everyone else thinks and acts in a certain way, I should too.

The basic idea of creating belief through accepting belief (CBTAB) is that you will subtly introduce your spectator to a belief that most other spectators have about you or your work.

This is done in an offbeat way, so you don’t draw much attention to it.

Here’s an example, so you can see the concept in action:

“People often ask me after I do this, if I have to make contact with the participant to read their thoughts. It’s not essential, but sometimes it does make things a little easier.”

A simple little statement, that’s delivered almost like a question and an answer.

You’ll notice that I start with:

“People often ask me.”

This suggests that the question is asked often. It implies that other people assume what I’m claiming to be true and ask a further question about it. Another way to create a similar effect is to say: “Most people ask.”
Why it works: Using this kind of sentence can be very powerful for two main reasons; firstly, we can only answer questions when we have the answer. Secondly, the answer isn’t just spoken, someone has to ask the question, for it to be relevant.

After this little contextual ‘power statement,’ I move on and say this popular question in simple, direct terms:

“… After I do this If I have to make contact with the participant to read their thoughts.”

This part of the statement is extremely powerful for a number of reasons:

  • It assumes that you have the ability to read thoughts; people apparently ask you this after you’ve read their thoughts and you hear it often, therefore you must read people’s thoughts often.
  • It puts a timing of the action of reading thoughts, like Banachek’s ‘witch doctor principle,’ it gives the ability of receiving the thought a physical element and its own moment in time. For all the spectator’s know, you could be receiving the thought as they write it down or at any other time. You’re taking the heat of the moment when the thought is written and placing it at the moment you touch them to apparently steal the thought. While this doesn’t remove the action of the writing the name down from their memory, it gives it a lot less importance. The importance is in the moment you touch them.

“It’s not essential, but sometimes it does make things a little easier.” The final part of this sentence gives an answer to the question, which shows your authority on the subject. By saying that it’s not essential for you to make contact doesn’t necessarily contradict the witch doctor point, but can potentially strengthen it, there will still be a point in the trick in which you will receive the thought, but this now allows you to turn this action from having to be a touch, to being able to be whatever you like, perhaps a strong stare directly through the eyes or something even more theatrical.Saying that “…it does make things a little easier,” implies that it’s not an easy task to do this, if it was easy to do, you wouldn’t even mention this action that could make it less difficult to perform.

Dominic: Thanks Dee, That’s a really useful technique. Where can readers find out more about techniques like this, if they feel that they would like to develop their ‘patter’ to have more of an influence on the magic they present?

Dee: It’s worth checking out Kenton Kneppers work, also if they are interested in further developing their characters, I would suggest reading How to get away with murder. It has a lot of advice on creating justifications and building your persona.

DO THIS: So there you are, a really basic use of the CBTAB principle. Dee shows us that every word we say really can be made to have impact and can help create a fantastic tool to enforce belief and strength in our claims and abilities as performers.

Look back on the magic tricks that you already perform and see if there is an opportunity to add in an introduction that will add belief through the acceptance of belief. It’s a very small addition to your ‘patter’ but you will be amazed at the reactions that this can have.

Dee Christopher on Creating a Persona and Style

by Merchant of Magic 2 Comments

 Dee Christopher magicianBy Dominic Reyes

Have you heard of Dee Christopher? He’s not been on TV yet, so he is isn’t in the mainstream public’s eye, but amongst magicians, his work is becoming very well established and respected. If you haven’t already experienced Dee Christophers work, check out his site here.

I want to look at a few important things we can learn from his approach to magic.

Knowing your own style.
Did you check out his website? If you did, chances are you understood the style of his magic within just a few seconds of looking at the first page of his website. Why is that? Because Dee has decided not to be a generic close-up magician. He has a persona and has created a character around the attributes associated with that persona.

Do a quick Google search for magicians in your area. Browse the sites and look at the themes and styles of the performers. 99% of them are all the same and interchangeable (I know, because I’m one of them myself) Now contrast that, to Dee’s site and the image he portrays.

A big fish in a small pond.
We are often taught that it’s better to be a small fish in a big pond, than a big fish in a small pond. That may be true in life, to give you room to grow and experience new things, but it’s not always the case when it comes to being a performer.

Now, you might love the image and style Dee presents, or it may leave you cold, but chances are, you DO have an opinion on it either way. It produces a series of preconceptions about both Dee Christopher and the mind magic tricks he would show you. Most other magicians tend to look generic, and their style gives the public very little clues as to what they will perform or if they will fit into the event a client is looking for. Because of this, they appeal to the middle ground. That’s the most competitive, crowded place to stand out in.

Dee Christopher has a niche. His appearance and magic makes him highly targeted to exactly the customers that are most likely to be the right fit for HIM. By doing this, be makes himself a big fish in a small pond. That’s a good place to be if you have a product to sell in the pond.

You don’t need to be a generic magician.
Have you ever watched a magic show where the magician is wearing a dinner suit and just looks all wrong? Maybe you have seen a young magician trying to perform a routine designed for an older magician and watched as the gags and references fall flat? That’s because beginners often feel they have to fit into a predetermined mold of what a magician SHOULD look and act like. That’s a big mistake. There really are no ‘ideal magician’ only entertainers who entertain people, and more importantly, entertainers who entertain groups of people that they fit in with and understand.

The famous magicians during the early 1900’s didn’t wear those suits because that’s what magicians traditionally wore. Previous to that, magicians tended to wear much more elaborate costumes. They dressed and acted as they did because they were copying the upper class theater audiences that would see them.

The lesson we can learn here is that your style must be your own. It doesn’t matter if it’s not the mainstream. If you have an authentic, original style, you will reach an authentic and enthusiastic market for your act. Staying away from the middle ground can really pay off, as you stand out from the crowd.

Dee Christopher is ‘Knowable’.
I talk to Dee quite often and catch up with what he is up to, and the shop often gives tips about that’s in the pipeline and what we think he would like. It’s very easy for us to do this because he has an authentic and consistent style, not only in his character, but also with the magic tricks he performs.

Fan’s of Dee Christopher can look at a new trick and instantly think ‘That would suit Dee’. Just like it’s possible to hear a song and know that it would suit a particular singer. It works in reverse too. A great trick may come along and even though it would play really well with his audience, Dee won’t perform it. He can’t, because it would not be a ‘fit’.

The magic Dee Christopher performs tends to be mentalism and psychokinetic demonstrations. His metal bending skills are world renowned, catching the attention of some of the biggest names in that field, including Uri Geller who personally endorsed him. Again, this is another niche that allows Dee to stand out from the crowd.

Do This:

1) Think about the magic you are currently performing. Does it have any consistent elements running through it, or is it a collection or random tricks that have impressed you enough to master?

2) If you do have a tendency towards a particular style of magic, could you work on building that into a full themed act and develop a persona that complements both the magic and your own style?

3) What could you change to make your act more memorable and targeted to a specific target group?

How can I know which hand hides a coin?

by Merchant of Magic Leave a Comment

Wireless Coin Detector For Magicians

I've just come from a meeting with Hugo Shelly and am pleased to announce that his amazing wireless coin in hand detector Sixth Sense 2.5 will be supplied by the Merchant of Magic.

Not only can it instantly tell which hand a spectator is holding a coin, it can now tell you if it's heads or tails up! All done wireless. If you are like me, you hate having to run wires under your shirt when performing. Sixth Sense fixed that, but never had the ability to tell you if a coin is heads or tails up. I'm pretty excited about this item for mentalists.

We love the current best selling magicians device for doing this trick FMT which is much cheaper, but does require you to hide wires. Sixth Sense 2.5 is a great wireless alternative, although it is much more expensive.

Which is better Sixth Sense 2.5 or FMT – Detector

That's actually quite a tough call. Both do the job really well, and with the addition of a polarity detector to Sixth Sense, it's no longer lagging behind FMT. The price difference will definitely be a factor for some magicians though. The real bonus in our opinion is the wireless technology in Sixth Sense 2.5, which, although still needing a wrist strap of some kind, does make it a breeze to put on and take of as needed.
