Should I Stop People on the Street to Show Them Street Magic Tricks?

by Merchant of Magic 1 Comment

Sam asks:  ‘How do I approach someone in the street to show them street magic tricks?‘

The team at The Merchant of Magic has been asked this question much more frequently over the last few years as more and more magicians become inspired by street magic on TV. The David Blaine street magic specials and the Dynamo Magician Impossible series have made approaching people on the street, appear to be an easy way to perform magic and get great reactions.

Hat’s off to Sam. He wants to get out and perform his magic, and is being proactive looking for an audience. Performing live is an essential part of every magicians training. However, we would not generally recommend that you approach people on the street. That’s more suited to a TV show that has permission and insurance to film. Let’s look at the reality for magicians considering this style of magic:

Magic on the Street Vs Street Entertainers.

There is a big difference between a street entertainer and a magician who walks the street showing people magic. Street entertainers tend to draw in a crowd, rather than stop people cold. The difference is permission. A street act is a show, designed to catch peoples attention, draw them in to watch and then entertain them. It’s a soft sell technique. Street entertainers don’t have to negotiate for attention. They perform, and the audience decides for themselves if they are interested in watching the magic.

In contrast, the skills to stop people on the street to show them magic tricks are very different. It’s a hard sell approach. The magician is forcing people to make a decision to watch the magic and receives either acceptance or rejection. That’s much tougher on the ego for a magician,  especially a beginner. The magician has to search for an audience over and over and over again as the group of spectators move on.

A street entertainer must create an entertaining act and learn the techniques and skills to build a crowd, hold it’s attention and work it as a group. A street magic magician, needs to master the cold call, introducing themselves, dealing with rejection, and performing to a small group.

Permission.

People like to be entertained, but generally on THEIR TERMS. People walking on a street are already doing something. They are traveling or shopping. Magic is a distraction to their primary activity, so right from the start, it has to negotiate with the spectators primary goals. That’s not a good starting point. Your introduction as a magician, your appearance, and manner all have to sell the proposition to the spectators. Unlike a street entertainer, that creates a spectacle, builds a crowd and then uses that to attract more VOLUNTARY interest, the street magician has to get permission from each group he or she approaches.

Permission also needs to be obtained from the venue or council in many locations. What may be viewed as street entertainment to some, is viewed as hawking by others.

Insurance.

It’s very unlikely that magicians will be covered with public liability insurance for stopping people on the street to show them magic tricks. It’s unlikely that your magic will cause a problem, but things can go wrong, people can be distracted and have accidents as the street is not a safe environment.

Interrupting people in a hurry.

Unless you pick a venue like a park or recreational area, it’s very likely that the majority of people traveling will be in a hurry and will not want to stop. It’s important that you bear this in mind, and be respectful of people not stopping, or being responsive. Even when people do stop to watch, sometimes they are doing so, as it’s awkward to say no (Have you ever stopped for a survey or charity collector, simple because you didn’t want to say no?) Understand this, learn to recognize it, and be respectful of people in this situation.

Are you trying to sell me something?

Streets are full of shops, and shops want to sell you stuff. Hawkers want to make money off people on the streets to. Most people will thing that you are trying to sell them something, in the first few moments that you approach them. You will need to find quick ways to defuse this concern.

No, thank you.

Expect to be rejected far more than you will be accepted. Even street magic TV shows have to stop a lot of people off camera before they find someone willing to stop and take part. No, thank you, is not an insult to you. It’s easy to be disheartened or take it personally, but you must learn to accept that it’s a positive, polite and helpful act from the spectators. Letting you know they are not interested, saves your effort and allows you to move on to the next group quickly.

Not everyone is nice.

The streets are the streets, and everyone walks them. Sooner or later you will run into someone who is not very nice, has problems or is simply looking for a victim. Your safety is far more important than a card trick.

The right sort of crowd.

Picking the right people to stop and show your magic tricks, is a skill you will build up over time. People relaxing in small groups may be much more inclined to watch your magic, than a business man on his way to a meeting. Picking locations where people slow down and unwind will give you a better ‘hit rate’ than busy street junctions.  Parks and public meeting points generally have the best chance of meeting willing spectators.

Don’t be alone.

If you do intend to stop people on the streets to show them magic tricks, don’t do it alone. Take a friend or work as a group. Your personal safety is not worth risking.

Getting Experience.

If you REALLY feel you want to do this, we would recommend taking on some part time work as a market researcher, you will get a LOT of experience with cold approaches on the street and learn some valuable lessons on how to deal with people in these situations. Market research positions are relatively easy to get, on a part time basis, often paid on commission.

We would love to know your experiences of performing street magic. How did you start? What did it teach you? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below:

How to do Street Magic Tricks – Tips and Advice for Magicians

by Merchant of Magic 1 Comment

How to do Street Magic

“I want to learn street magic tricks. I am having trouble learning more magic tricks that can be used for street magic. Some tips would be great, and also suggestions for some street magic tricks I can learn.” – Jr

Street magic has become a worldwide phenomenon since David Blaine released Street Magic, his first TV Special.

Street Magic used to mean a performer that would gather a crowd for a show and then pass a hat around at the end to earn a living, the term Street Magic now it is used to refer to magicians that perform unprompted. Street magicians approach people in the street, often for free, simply for the love of performing.

There are lots of magic tricks that are great for street magic, and some that are not so great. I will go through a few key points that I believe make a great street magic trick.

Make your street magic quick and to the point.

Build up short routines that do not drag on. When you perform street magic for the public, they have not paid for a show and are not expecting one, you are essentially taking up their time. It may be to show them something amazing that will enrich their lives, but it is still their time you are spending. After you show them something, they may well want to invest more time in you then that will be their choice, and you are then free to show them some more street magic.

Learn street magic that’s as visual as possible.

You will find the reactions are much better if it is visual. Street magic has got a reputation for being visually amazing and so when you perform magic tricks for people in public this is what they expect. The public can be pretty honest in their opinions and harsh as critics, so it is best not to let them down!

Try to use ordinary or borrowed objects.

It is best to use items that are ordinary and not magic props. The idea is that you can perform magic tricks with anything and everything, so it is best to create that illusion. Steer away from obvious magic props like boxes and things you would ONLY find in a magic set or magic shop. If you can borrow someone’s phone or personal item and perform an amazing magic trick with that, you will see your reactions go through the roof.

You can find out about a large selection of magic tricks for street magic conditions here.

How Does Dynamo Do His Tricks?

by Merchant of Magic 7 Comments

Magic Shops are asked how Dynamo Does his Tricks
How does Dynamo do his tricks? This is the most common question the team at the Merchant of Magic is asked. In fact, a day doesn’t go by without someone doesn’t phone the magic shop to ask just that question.

Why do they want to know?

Many callers have just seen an episode of Dynamo Magician Impossible on TV. They have been amazed by the show and simply want to work out Dynamo does it. For other’s, the dynamo TV series acts as a gateway, inspiring them to learn magic for themselves. They call the shop for help taking the first step in magic training.

How should a magic shop answer this question? There are several possible answers a magic shop could give:

How does Dynamo do his tricks? Answer: It’s a secret.

Magic shops use a code of conduct developed by magicians over the years, to allow the exchange of magic secrets amongst themselves. Training and magic tricks need to be exchanged, but magic shops agree not to actively promote exposing the secrets of magic tricks to the general public. When  a person that magic shop doesn’t know, calls to ask: how does Dynamo do his magic tricks? We assume that the person is simply a member of the public and is looking for answers to a puzzle rather than seeking to learn magic.

How does Dynamo do his tricks? Answer: With a huge production company on TV

Much of Dynamo magician impossible is TV magic. That’s very different to the type of magic tricks that would work if a magician were performing magic tricks live.

Dynamo’s TV show is a polished product, produced, edited and directed. It’s the work of a huge team of people. When people ask magic shops: How does dynamo do his magic tricks, they are hoping that it will be something they can simply buy and perform themselves. This is often not the case. Some possible answer:

How does Dynamo do his tricks? Answer: That’s the wrong question to ask.

The saying goes:

‘The only silly question is the one that isn’t asked’.

That’s true, but there are better ways to ask the question. How about:

That’s true, but there are better ways to ask the question. How about:‘How can I do magic tricks like dynamo?’

It’s great to be inspired by famous magicians, but one of the real magicians secrets is not to try to become a clone of any single magician.

If you enjoy the type of magic Dynamo performs (Street Magic), look for magic tricks you could do in that style. Be original, yet with a popular theme. Clones are never as successful as the original. As a magician, you need to step out in your own direction. Use other magicians as inspiration and learn as much as you can from them about presentation and performance, but don’t follow too closely in any one person’s footsteps. If you do, you will encounter all the problems they have faced, but very little of their luck or breaks.

Ask a good magic shop for help choosing magic tricks in the style of Dynamo Magician Impossible and they will be happy to help you. If you ask them: How does Dynamo do his tricks? They won’t answer that question directly. However, they will be happy to talk to you about your performing style, persona and the magic tricks you already do. Then, they can suggest magic tricks that would fit you perfectly. The best magic shops are staffed by working magicians so they will have invaluable free information for you on how to get it right.
